Taiwan rock band Mayday (五月天) nabbed six major awards at the 23rd Golden Melody Awards (金曲獎) on Saturday, making it the biggest winner of the largest music event in the Chinese-speaking world.
Mayday won Best Mandarin Album, Best Band, Best Album Producer, Best Music Arranger, Best Composer, and Best Song of the Year with its eighth album Second Round (第二人生), released in 2011, after a three-year wait.
In the competitive Best Mandarin Female Singer category, Singaporean singer and songwriter Tanya Chua (蔡健雅) beat strong contenders Hebe Tien (田馥甄), A-mei (張惠妹), Stefanie Sun (孫燕姿), A-Lin (黃麗玲) and Waa Wei (魏如萱) to win the title. It was the third time she was crowned at the annual music awards, a new record in the show’s history.
Meanwhile, the Best Mandarin Male Singer surprisingly went to singer and songwriter Luantan Ascent (亂彈阿翔), who beat household names Yoga Lin (林宥嘉), Jay Chou (周杰倫), Eason Chan (陈奕迅) and Jam Hsiao (蕭敬騰) to capture the trophy.
Other winners included Best Lyricist Wu Hsiung, Best Taiwanese Male Singer Huang Shan-liang (荒山亮), Best Taiwanese Female Singer Jeannie Hsieh (謝金燕), and Best New Artist Llid Kaolo (以莉·高露).
One of the highlights of the ceremony came when the super girl band SHE stood on stage together, the first performance since Selina Jen (任家萱) suffered disastrous burn injuries in late 2010.
