Taiwanese pop star A-mei to hold free concert in support of same-sex marriage

By Isabel Quan

Taiwanese pop star and gay rights activist A-mei has announced that she will hold a free concert this upcoming Sunday in Taiwan as a way to show support for same-sex marriage.

The singer also called off her World Tour that was supposed to be held next autumn and gave back the deposit, total of forty-million RMB.

Gay Stars News reported:

The concert will cost around US$100,000 to put on and A-mei will be covering the costs out of her own pocket instead of relying on sponsors.

A draft of a bill to allow same-sex couples to marry and adopt passed its first reading in the Legislative Yuan in October but thousands of opponents took to the streets to protest it last year.

‘No slogans, no posters that night. I want to use music to give people who are pursuing respect and true love the courage to continue,’ A-mei wrote on her Facebook page on Wednesday.

A-mei was the first Taiwanese celebrity to sign last year's petition for same-sex marriage in Taiwan. She's been an outspoken advocate for same-sax marriage since 2007 and often takes the stage to voice her support for gay rights at concerts.
