Korean filmmaker Kwak Jae-young has quit as director of Yang Guifei (杨贵妃), saying actress Fan Bingbing (范冰冰) has usurped his role.
The director said he was angry and disappointed about China’s filmmaking system.
According to sources familiar with the dispute, since the film started shooting on January 29, Bingbing, also an investor, has frequently increased her part.
This has caused Japanese actor Shun Oguri’s role to be greatly reduced and Korean actor On Ju-wan’s parts completely omitted.
The film’s production company, however, issued a statement denying this.
Instead, it blamed Jae-young for failing to meet their requirements.
The production company praised Bingbing and said it is in talks with a top Asian director to take over.
